Cellulite preys on many of us as it reveals itself in unflattering lights. But what actually is cellulite, and what can be done to rid off it?
‘Most women experience cellulite at some point,’ says Brian Williams, Biotherm National Skincare Manager (quoted in Marie Claire). ‘It can be affected by bad diet, lifestyle, the monthly cycle or it can be genetic.
Cellulite appears in the skin most commonly on the buttocks and thighs. It consists of underlying fat deposits, giving the surface a dimpled and at times lumpy appearance.
According to Marcia Cross (founder of Bliss), collagen in the thighs loosens, allowing ‘over-sized fat cells to poke through’. This is what contributes to the bumpy appearance on the skins surface. Genetics can play a huge role on whether you are prone to cellulite or not but its existence most commonly is down to poor diet consisting of too much fat, carbohydrates, or salt and too little fibre.
Secondly, cellulite is most commonly found in those who do not exercise. Sitting or standing in one position for long periods of time can mean circulation is not at full charge, increasing levels of cellulite. If you reduce the underlying fat deposits healthily, the appearance of cellulite is reduced.
So what do we do?
Yes cellulite is common in women, but if you feel like you have had just about enough of it, then let’s get cracking on making some healthy changes.
1) Improve what you are eating. An imbalance of fatty foods in our diet, most prominently processed fats, are proven to effect levels of cellulite. Try to eat natural foods, high in fibre. Eat regularly a variety of fruits and replace white, starchy foods such as rice and pasta with their brown counter-parts.
2) Drink plenty of water as it helps the collagen in targeted areas stay supple and stronger, as well as having a range of other health benefits.
3) If your BMI is out of whack, and you are clinically overweight, it is very likely this is contributing to your cellulite. Let cellulite be your driving force to living a healthier life style and kick off that extra weight. Once you start dropping the pounds, often you drop the cellulite.
