Stop making excuses to break that diet
So that cake was just too tempting? You were too stressed to eat healthily? The dog ate your rice cakes and you were forced to eat crisps instead? Our experts have heard every excuse in the book – and they’re not buying any of them… By Jane Murphy
‘My partner doesn’t like me dieting’
Non-dieters often try to sabotage their partners’ efforts, according to recent US research. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Maybe he misses those Friday night takeaways on the sofa. Or perhaps he feels threatened by the fresh wave of confidence your weight loss may bring. ‘Either way, this is no excuse for you to give up,’ insists Jacqui Cleaver, managing director at New You Boot Camp ‘Nobody can reasonably have a problem with someone making a positive life change. So if your partner doesn’t seem happy about it, you need to find out why and deal with it. Remember, it’s this underlying issue – not the diet – that needs to be addressed here.’
‘My job involves wining and dining’
Even if your professional life isn’t a constant whirlwind of champagne and canapes, the ‘quick drink after work’ or a colleague’s birthday lunch can still threaten to play havoc with your diet. The solution? Join in – but don’t over-indulge. ‘I understand everyone wants to impress their bosses, clients and colleagues, but there’s really no reason to feel under pressure to knock back the booze or polish off a big dinner,’ says Jacqui Cleaver. ‘You can still go to these events and have a great time. If you’re going to a restaurant, call ahead and order a healthy option in advance if you don’t want to make a fuss at the meal. Just remember that nobody ever missed out on promotion because they didn’t eat dessert!’
