Many of our clients look at us as if we have four heads when we advise to meal prep. This is until we explain why we are huge advocates and explain the time it takes.
Meal prepping has become a real topic of choice in today’s media. Images of meal prep boxes split into tidy sections split between your allocated carbs, protein, fats and vegetable allocations. All images have their token svelte, or ripped, young fitness model to boot. Well, meal prepping isn’t just for the fitness fanatics it is the key to making a healthy lifestyle easy, quick and affordable.
If you know what you are eating each day and you have the food ready to go it allows for you to have easy access to the right foods and make good choices.
Many of our clients who are overweight or in poor health have reached this point due to being stressed, sleep deprived, grabbing foods on the run (generally the wrong foods which are process and full of useless calories), and just generally not considering what they are eating.
Food is thy medicine, and as such, eating the right foods allows for your body to feel nourished and revived. Optimal performance of both the mind and body is absolutely linked to the food you eat. So, if you are in a position to control the food you eat – and you can prepare the food you enjoy in advance – a healthy lifestyle becomes achievable.
When you consider the time it takes to meal prep, many people freak out and say, “I would never have the time to prepare my food for a week.”
This is always the reaction (well, at least 90% of the time anyway!), and we do appreciate why you say this. However, now sit down and honestly think about how much time you spend per day cooking dinner, and preparing breakfast and lunch. Or, alternatively, consider how much money you spend on prepared food and dinners out.
When you add the time and money you spend currently, we are purely advising that you condense the time to one afternoon and maybe one evening a week to cook in bulk. Meal prepping does save you time and it also saves you a huge amount of money.
The real beauty of meal prepping, at least in our opinion, is the organisation. It is the most successful way to ensure that you break your old bad habits of eating poorly, grabbing food and not being aware of what you are eating. When you meal prep you will be forced to be mindful about what you are preparing and therefore more mindful about what you are eating.
Mindfulness is the absolute key to changing any bad habit and the key to living a healthy lifestyle.
